What are Your Goals for 2018?

A few years ago I stopped making New Year's Resolutions and started making New Year's Goals. I'm making some new goals to help me through the year. I try not to do this on the first day of the year because I'm not making resolutions but goals.

I like to make my goals as specific and attainable as possible. Since I don't have a picture book published making my goal "Getting Published" or "Getting an Agent" isn't going to work. I make goals that I can make happen. I can't force someone to publish my work, or be my agent, but I can make myself polish manuscripts, create dummies and send out a certain number of query letters in a year.

Before I start listing my new goals I'll do a recap on my 2017 goals:

1. Win Storystorm I'm happy to report that I won Storystorm last year! I get so many ideas from this event every year. I'm taking part in it again this year! You can sign up here until January 9th!   https://taralazar.com/2017/12/28/storystorm-2018-registration-is-open/

2. Win the 12x12 Challenge 2017 was the first year that I was able to complete the 12x12 Challenge. I have learned so much being a part of this group. I now have a wonderful critique group that started in 2017 and will continue throughout this year as well. I can't have 2017 without this group in my life. Registration for new members starts January 9th: http://12x12challenge.com/membership/

3. Look for Freelance Illustration Work I did get some illustration work in 2017, but nothing that I went out and looked for. I will need to start looking for new sources of inspiration this year.

4. Finish 2-3 Picture Book Dummies I was not able to finish any dummies last year. I focused my energies on other things. Maybe I can make this a goal this year.

5. Submit at Least 6 Different Manuscripts to Editors/Agents I wasn't happy with my work enough to send it out as is last year, so I did not do any submissions last year.

6. Spend More Focused Time on Social Media I started two instagram accounts this year, so that's progress. My personal illustrator's account: https://www.instagram.com/dani_duck_art/ Where I post my artwork and different things about my artist life. And my Smart Dummies Challenge account: https://www.instagram.com/smart_dummies_challenge/ This is where I post blog posts, kidlit events and pictures from illustrators, writers and other people in (or that can be related to) the kidlit field. The tag for this is #smartdummieschallenge. The tag is to help me see your work so I can share it. I found I needed two accounts so my personal work didn't get buried in someone else's work.

7. Spend More Time With Family I did not have any freelance jobs around Christmas and I admit that it felt good. I was able to spend more time with my family and it was a crazy time. It was absolutely wonderful and I hope that future Christmases are mostly busy with family things.

SO that was my last year. How did your year go? What are your goals for 2018? Let me know in the comments!

Hello 2017 Goals!

I am hoping this year will be a lot better than last year. Yesterday I said how I didn't come close to completing all of my goals for the year. This year I want to do better. I hope that the problems I'm now facing wont keep me from my goals.

Please note that I usually make these goals with the understanding that I wont complete them all. I like to make big plans for every year. If I achieve even part of these I'll be pretty happy.

1. Win Storystorm

Storystorm use to be PiBoIdMo, but has been changed for all ages/genres. You just have to come up with 30 story ideas in 30 days (they can be as short as one sentence or as long as a first draft). I'm super excited about this, so I want to make sure you all get a chance to register. I'm even making my husband try it out this year. Go to https://taralazar.com/2016/12/27/storystorm-2017-registration-is-open/ before January 7th!

For fun I will be posting ridiculous story ideas throughout January.

2. Win the 12x12 Challenge

This is an important goal for me. I've competed in the 12x12 Challenge (12 picture books in 12 months) in the last 3 (or is it 4 now?) years and haven't focused enough to complete the challenge. This is an absolutely wonderful challenge that has wonderful webinars, prizes and support groups to help you achieve your goals. Sign up starts January 10th http://12x12challenge.com/

3. Look for Freelance Illustration Work
I love doing the freelance work I do get, but it would be lovely if I could earn a living off of art!

4. Finish 2-3 Picture Book Dummies

5. Submit at Least 6 Different Manuscripts to Editors/Agents

6. Spend More Focused Time on Social Media
My time online really suffered in the past two years. I'd like to do more of it, if I only get a chance to #kidlitart on Twitter every now and again!

7. Spend More Time With Family

This is so not the last thing I'm going to do. If I'm being honest, then this is the first. Seven is my favorite number, so this is why I made it #7. This is also kind of a work thing, because I'd also like to document more of what my kids say and do so I can use them in books.

Happy 2017 Everyone!

Computer Life & Updates

I am not sure what is more stressful: Having a computer die or getting a new computer. There is so much to do when getting a new computer. It was tough making the right selection especially since most places don't allow for computer customization. In the end I decided on a gaming computer (even though I don't use my computer for many games) that would allow me to upgrade in the future. Now I'm spending hours installing all of my old programs.

Most of my work and photos were backed up, but it still hurts to lose what I've lost. Remember to back up all of your work, pictures and anything worth saving. My laptop died with little warning.

Despite all the problems I've had with my computer things are going pretty well! Smart Dummies will be in October as planned. I just have 1-2 more people to create posts. Lots more info to come on this next month.

Kids are doing well. Both crazy. David is starting kindergarten on September 6th! Michael has been cruising for about a month now and is threatening to walk soon. So much for getting any rest while David is in school!

Hope everyone is well and will post again soon!

Computer Death

Dear Readers,

I regret to inform you that my computer has died a horrible death. He's not getting a funeral, because he purposely died early. His name is being written on the wall of computer infamy as we speak.

Currently, I am using two rocks, three blades of grass and a bug to communicate with you. I'm pretty good with using the two rocks, but the bug is constantly flying places it doesn't belong and the blades of grass are useless. As such, I will not be able to access much more than email on these rocks, and even then I could catch on fire at any moment. It may be a month or so before the issue is fully resolved.

I am bravely surfing the internet without the proverbial surf board. I will be vigilantly using most of my time looking for illustrators for Smart Dummies, using social media on my iPhone and braving the depths of many video game dungeons. If you don't hear from me within a month, please note that this is a blog and most of my posts are in text format. I shall do my best to post when I can!

Scuttlesleeps and nufferbottoms,

Dani

Coming Back is Hard to Do!

I've been away much longer than I wanted. Times have been tough. You may know that I have two kids now instead of one. This leads to some pretty crazy times. Let me tell you about them!

First off... you wouldn't believe how hard it is to get a baby to grow a mustache. It's almost impossible, but it is a Duck tradition. Sometimes you have to scratch him on the head to get him to see reason.
Taking care of two kids is hard. Especially hard because kids really never listen to their parents. True, their parents aren't as interesting as their hands and that's a problem. The thing is... what was I saying? My hands are so awesome.
I remember. I was going to tell you that I'm working on bringing my blog back to life. It's going to take a lot of time and a lot of coffee. Mostly just a lot of coffee. I've got some cool stuff to show and tell all of you. I just was looking at my hands and forgot everything!

The point is I'll be back soon. Believe me when I say: My blog will be great again!

Would I lie to you?

Goals, Goals, Goals!

You may or may not know that I had a little one January 30th. His name is Michael Allen Duck. He's been keeping me pretty busy the last few weeks. I also have a crazy 5 year old named David. I'm getting back into the groove of things. Michael is much easier to take care of than my oldest, so I am so antsy to get back into drawing and writing. I want to take this moment to write down my goals (while baby is sleeping).
1. Win the 12x12 I've done the 12x12 (12 picture books in 12 months) for years now.  I've still never written 12 picture books in 12 months. I'm going to rectify that this year. It is a great community and has helped me become a better Writer and Illustrator. There is still a little time to join: http://12x12challenge.com/membership

 2. Create More Dummies I'd like to create at least 2-3 picture book dummies this year. It will be tough, but I think it's a reasonable goal.

3. Refine Current Dummies I need to edit the dummies I have currently. So far they haven't been picked up for publication. I have some strong ideas for these, and I believe the stories are strong enough to spend the time refining them.

4. Make Some Coloring Books I want to try my hand at a few coloring books this year. It should take less time than a PB dummy because the images don't have to be in color.

5. Submit Work to Magazines I've severely been lacking in this. I want to have some of my work printed in magazines this year.

6. Secure an Agent or Art Rep I feel like this is doable this year, so I'm doing it!

7. Send out Art to Editors I haven't done this, so I need to get my art submissions in gear.

I will be continuing Smart Dummies this year. I already have a few people interested as guest bloggers. I'm hoping to have even more prizes this year and do a lot more prep work. It should be a great year!

Akemi Ito Shares Her Technique

Quick note before I start: My internet is currently down until 12:30am tonight. Until then I'll have limited access to the internet. I am likely going to have to post the Gesture Post on the Smart Dummies group on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/548159692008535/ I will be making a post tomorrow about the event and how to make a shedule for yourself during the event! I'm setting up some posts for the event so things will run smoothly now. Please contact me here or on any of my social media if you need anything before tomorrow and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

_______

Akemi Ito is a fantastic Illustrator I met in the Canada West SCBWI. She has a wonderful way with expressive characters and beautiful colors. I asked her on my blog today to share her process with you. I hope that this inspires you, and if you have any questions please ask them in the comments!

The image is done with watercolor, white poster color, sumi calligraphy ink and masking fluid.

1. Draw the background roughly with a blue colored pencil. Apply masking fluid over characters and parts of the background where you want to have some special effects, or different color values.

2. Apply water all over the paper to do Wet on Wet painting. Both sumi ink and watercolor get much lighter in color when it is dry, so keep adding colors to increase values and contrast.

 3. Wait till it is completely dry to remove masking fluid. Look at the whole image carefully to add more colors and contrasts.( I added more clouds with poster color white by dry brushing)

 4. Finally. color in characters, and do some spattering with white and vermilion red to give a finishing touch.

This is the artist who inspired me a lot on Youtube. I am also taking her online class at the moment. https://www.youtube.com/user/storibeart

Dani's Updates - August 5th

I'm working on the image for Smart Dummies. I struggled at first because I was trying to rush the watercolors. You can't rush watercolors. I'm happy with what I have now and just need to put everything together. I'm hoping to have it done before the weekend. The Facebook group for the event is here. I will be picking up the activity on my blog over the next few weeks!

Dani's Updates - ALL THE ANNOUNCEMENTS!

This week I officially announced that I am pregnant. I'm due December 17th. Many of you have seen the announcement on Facebook. This Horror Movie poster was created by my friend Amanda Hughes-Smolyn. I found out fairly early this year that I am pregnant. It has also been the reason why I haven't been as active this year. I have been so exhausted! Even in my second trimester I'm still tired, but I'm doing my best.

A change has been made for Picture Book Dummy Month in the past week. Picture Book Dummy Month will have a name change soon. I have had too many people being confused between this event and Picture Book Idea Month. It's not worth the confusion! There are still a few days left to let me know what you think on this: http://on.fb.me/1DbHU4V or you can leave a comment below.

On Saturday, August 1st Picture Book Dummy Month will have a new name. This is the day I be releasing the names of all the people who will be helping out with the Dummy Challenge. I will also be listing some of the prizes. If all goes well I'll have the sign up page up along with the badge for your blogs!

WHAT I'M READING
All the picture books. David has one more week of reading before he can get his medal for the library reading program. I'll admit I'm exhausted. He usually wants me to read at least three stories at night... sometimes he gets more.

WHAT I'M WRITING/DRAWING
I'm hoping to finish up the portrait I'm painting this week. I would like to have the blog/website badge ready for Saturday. I also need to work on the Paper Twin's clothing.

Update Day and a Cookie

There are no cookies in this post. My friend Donna made me a lovely batch of peanut butter cookies. We ate them all. so no more cookies.

I'm doing pretty well with getting people on board for Picture Book Dummy Month. I have about 22-24 people on board so far. I'm hoping to send out a few more emails today to get the last bit I need and a few extras for the Pre/Post event!

WHAT I'M READING
Too Many Toys by David Shannon. Love his books and this one is no exception. We loved the David books when my son was younger (still love them) and this newest one is too true. It's actually so true that it's scary.

WHAT I'M WRITING/DRAWING
I have the Paper Twins all planned out for this week. I just need to get them into inks. Tomorrow I have the day away from my kiddo, so I plan to work on a portrait for a friend. Too many things have happened lately for me to finish it. I also need to get cracking on the badge for Picture Book Dummy Month!

Picture Book Dummy Month - Update July 19

Just a quick post to give you an update for Picture Book Dummy Month. As of now I have about 20-22 guest posters right now. A couple weren't sure if they'd be able to participate. I need to go back over my emails, but I believe there are 6-8 prizes and at least two of them are huge prizes.

At this point I need to send out a few more emails just to make sure I have enough people to run the event. I think 10 more emails should do the trick. I don't have anyone for the pre or post event, so lots of space left. If you'd like to help out in any way please send an email to daniduckart(@)gmail.com.

I am working on a badge to put on your website/blog. I'm hoping to put up a few basic drawings next week so people can tell me what they think. I want them finished by August 1st. I can't believe it's almost August. Time flies when you're having fun!

Dani's Updates and Picture Book Dummy Month

I've spent most of my time setting up Picture Book Dummy Month. So far I've gained 7-8 (one person isn't sure) people wanting to do posts and 3 prizes! It's been quite the process so far, and it's just going to get crazier. Bring on the crazy! I'm excited for this new event.

Between the heat and my son being sick I've been a bit behind. I have to finish sending out emails tonight or tomorrow. I've gotten nothing but positive responses for this event. The few that declined said they may be guests next year.

For anyone interested I'm going to be talking on my friend Patricia Pinsk's blog about the process (likely next month). Her website is here:http://www.patriciapinsk.com/ it's a fantastic resource. Patricia will be talking about Website Design as a part of Picture Book Dummy Month!

WHAT I'M READING
Apparently every book in the library. We brought home so many books today!

WHAT I'M WRITING/DRAWING
I haven't got a clue what I'll do for the Paper Twins dolls this week. I'll draw something up tonight and get it digitized for Friday. I don't want to let the paper dolls fall to the wayside while planning this event. I also have a portrait and a dummy to finish up.

Announcing Picture Book Dummy Month!

Officially Announcing Picture Book Dummy Month!

I know today is supposed to be my update day, but instead of telling you all the things I'm just announcing Picture Book Dummy Month. September 1-30th Illustrators can challenge themselves to work on a basic Picture Book Dummy. There will be guest posts and critique groups to help you out during the process. You do not have to create any final images to win. If you want to find out more click here: http://daniduckart.blogspot.ca/p/picture-book-dummy-month.html Do not be afraid to ask questions! I'll add them to the FAQ if necessary.

I will be doing a lot of work for this event. I have already put all interviews on hold for my blog. I am also temporarily removing my "Best Link List Ever". It's severely outdated, and I will have so much to add after this event is over. I'm still planning to post paper doll clothes until the event begins!

Also to all my friends in Canada:

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Dani's Updates - June 24

It's been another crazy week, but in a good way. I'm hoping to sign an illustration contract soon, which will give me the funding to have a bit more time to illustrate.  I'm applying for a few other freelance jobs this week. I was able to send out my coloring book manuscript to an agent last week, so fingers crossed!

Today is #PBpitch day on Twitter. You can pitch your picture book by including #PBpitch in your pitch. They are only looking for manuscripts or manuscripts with illustrations as I understand it, so I wont be able to pitch my wordless books. Good luck to you if you are pitching today!

WHAT I'M READING
Read so many books this week! Bug Patrol written by Denise Dowling Mortensen and illustrated by Cece Bell was one of my favorites this week. The characters were really cute, and the sound words were a lot of fun to read.

WHAT I'M WRITING/DRAWING
I have paper doll clothes to finish digitizing in the next couple of days. I need to work on a portrait of a kid's friend. There are some emails that I need to send, but I'm trying to figure out the best time to send them.  I also need to get cracking on another picture book dummy.

Dani's Updates - June 10th

It's funny how things change in a week. I am temporarily putting interviews on hold. I may pick up one or two over the next few months, but I wont be actively seeking interviews. I have a big blog event I want to do in September. I want to focus my energies on this for now.

WHAT I'M READING
Tons of picture books. My son and I went to the library Tuesday and we picked up brand new copies of "The Little Rabbit Who Liked to Say MOO" and "I'm Not Reading!" both by Jonathan Allen and "Cowboy Camp" by Tammy Sauer and illustrated by Mike Reed. All fun books. We'll be getting more Tuesday because it's the start of the Summer Reading Program!!

WHAT I'M WRITING/DRAWING
This week I will be doing dummy work and a portrait for a friend. Also on FRIDAY I plan to release a new paper doll on my blog. I have the dolls (male and female) done, but I need to get the clothing done. I hope to have at least one set of outfits this Friday, and every Friday after post up new outfits. For this you could pay millions of dollars, but it will be absolutely free! (Good deal, no?) You can just mail me checks for the millions you would have paid. ;)

Here is a first look at the paper dolls. They aren't 100% finished (so feel free to leave comments). I did want to make them alike. Tell me what you think!
