BC Cancer Foundation and Me!

Sometime early this year, when I was exercising regularly, I decided to join the Workout to Conquer Cancer. I was all set to give some donations from my current business to this event. Well things happened and I am no longer in the business I was in before. I've since then started a new business and have an Etsy shop to go along with said business. Since not much has changed, and I still need to raise $1000 I thought I'd go ahead and use my business to earn money for this!

Okay, okay, I'll admit that I'm not making any money with my Etsy shop yet, but I'm sure that will change soon. Either that or I'll end up in the poor house (it's all good). When I do start making money, please know that 5% of my sales (before taxes) will go to the BC Cancer Foundation. I have planned to do this from the beginning, however I had to get permission to say so!

It's a good thing that I got permission, because I was going to use the wrong logo! That would have been embarrassing. This was the logo I was going to use! It's okay and now everything has worked out! If you want to donate directly you can click on the logo in the upper left corner of my blog or go here: My Personal Fundraising Page If you can support my shop the link is to the right just under my bio or you can go here: My Etsy Store

Thanks so much for reading, and hopefully together we can help fight cancer!

And the Liebster Award Goes To...

This post was meant to be done a long time ago... like last week. My computer died before I could post this but I want to make sure I get this going.

I am going to have to give a shout out and a heartfelt Thank You to Becky Shillington for nominating me for the Leibster Blog Award. The Leibster award is giving to wonderful blogs with under 200 followers. The word "Liebster" Means sweetheart in German, so you either have a bit of sweet love for my blog or you want to marry it (I'm good either way). Even if you pine for my blog for the rest of your life, you may bring yourself to admit that it's a nice award. Please visit Becky's blog here: http://beckyshillington.blogspot.ca
In accepting this award I am contractually obligated to answer 10 questions of Becky's choosing and then command 5-10 other people to answer my similarly worded questions.  The goal here is to thoroughly embarrass the people who receive this award. Oh, no, wait... that's my goal. In any case make up a batch of these cookies: http://beckyshillington.blogspot.ca/2013/09/a-super-sweet-blog-award-and-my-recipe.html read my answers, and then cower in the corner if I call on you by name!

THE QUESTIONS PLEASE
1. When did you first know you'd like to be a writer (or illustrator)?
I think it started in High School. In my Freshman year we had to create original coloring books and read them in front of the class. I'll have to tell you that mine ruled all of the other coloring books in the class. As a Sophomore I had an excellent writing teacher named Glen Shellhammer. This was the first time I really was encouraged to write. One of the few teachers I've had over the years that really believed in me.
I decided to take an Art Major in College, because it would reduce the number of math classes I'd have to take. Little did I know that Artists didn't need to know anything about math, because they'd never have enough money to worry about these things. Just after I graduated I spent my life savings ($1500) on a graduate course in Illustration taught by Dominic Catalano. This was worth more than the $30,000 some I had spent on about 2.5 years of University. Loved the class and decided to become an Illustrator though I may never be able to afford rent.

2. If you could meet any author, living or deceased, who would it be?
First off, I'd rather meet a living author. The dead ones are no fun to speak to. There are so many I'd like to meet, but I don't know if I'd like those people as well as their work. I think the best answer is that I'd like to meet living authors that are intelligent, who I'd get along with, and who'd actually get me. I'd be more than thrilled to meet any author who was in the SCBWI, 12 x 12, those that take part in the Chapter Book Challenge, those that I talk to on Twitter or any other group where I'm a member. I'd rather be a friend to people than a fan.

3. Coffee or tea?
Mostly Coffee. I appreciate tea, but I appreciate it more with sugar. Sugar is not my friend right now so I stick mostly with Coffee. When I can afford bucket loads of loose leaf tea, or decide I want sugary drinks in my diet I'll put tea on even footing with coffee.
4. What item is #1 on your "Bucket List?"
Live Forever

5.  What topic do you think is most overdone in the kidlit market today?
Hrm depends on the kidlit. Overly sappy/cute stories are bothersome, but not necessarily the most overdone.
For YA it's Vampire Stories and Post Apocalyptic Stories. These can be done, and done well, but mostly it's a flood of "Meh" stories. If a story is really well done it doesn't matter if it's overdone, but really I'd wait to sell any Vampire and Post Apocalyptic stories for a while.

6. What is the best book you've read in the last six months?
The Hunger Games Series (Post Apocalyptic story done so well). Things similar to this have been done, but no where near as well (and anyone who uses this as an argument should know it's not always about who does it first).

7. Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Night Owl. Always have been. If I try to get up early to do something my son will just wake up, so I'll just enjoy the night for now.

8. What is your favorite opening line from a book?
I rarely remember the opening lines of books, though they are very important. When I do remember them they are usually morbid or somewhat unmemorable.

9. Do you write better in silence or with background noise? (If you chose background noise, then what kind?) Depends on what kind of mood I am. Mostly quiet music if I do listen to anything. I'll start writing what I'm hearing (especially on the tv) and that makes it hard for any of my own thoughts to be written down.
10. What book has had the most profound effect upon your writing style?
I think every book has a profound effect on my writing style. I've changed my writing style a lot over the years, so I don't know if I can attribute this to any one book. I can say that if a book I like is fresh in my mind (being I've read it within a week before writing) I will often be able to/or try to write in a similar voice as that book.

It's your turn! I'll be bugging you on your blogs shortly, but if your name is on the list you have received the Leibster Blog Award from yours truly! If you choose to accept it you will have to answer the 10 questions I came up with which will be listed after your name. No pressure to join in, but this should be fun!

Great Blogs
Meg Miller: http://megmillerwrites.blogspot.ca/

Sue Frye: http://inkler.blogspot.ca/

Nancy Vo: http://nvoitsadraw.blogspot.ca/

Helena Juhasz  http://helenajuhaszillustration.blogspot.ca/

Please answer these questions however you see fit. Since I'm lazy I'm copying and pasting the instructions: "If you choose to accept here are the directions: Link back to the blogger that tagged you. Nominate 5-10 others and answer the questions of the one who tagged you (mine are below). Then ask 10 questions for the bloggers you nominate as well as letting your nominees know of their award. Oh, yeah—and have fun! ☺"

1. What is your favorite thing about writing or illustrating for children?

2. Who or what inspired you to become a writer or illustrator?

3. What is one thing that most people don't know about you?

4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

5. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?

6. What do you do when you aren't writing/illustrating?

7. Color or Black & White?

8. How long?

9. How annoying is it that I tagged you on my blog for this?

10. Do you have any big events that you are going to or hosting soon?

What's Up Wednesday? Oh So Many Things!

Once again I have failed to do my blog review. Today I have a really good reason. My Grandmother-In-Law had to be moved into a full care retirement community last Wednesday. Monday we moved a lot of things over the border (couch, washer/dryer, storage) from Bellingham to our place. Yesterday I spent the whole day helping my Mother-in-Law to clean and organize the place. It was great getting new things but I'd trade it all to not have Nan in a full care facility. She's doing great though, and she needs the added care. I am completely wiped out after these two days... I even canceled my tickets to the "Parent's Bloggers Unite" tonight. (#pbuyvr in case you want to know what I'm talking about on Twitter). I'm sad that I can't make the event but I have so much to do this week!

What I'm Writing/Drawing

Still adding a lot to my Etsy shop. Feeling the pressure now, because I have a ton of things to get printed and some of those aren't ready to be printed yet. My first show is on the 20th and I need business cards, illustration prints, poster, greeting cards, small coloring books and maybe a few more of the big coloring books. The only things that aren't ready for print are the greeting cards, so that will be my big rush job this week. I'm also working hard at booking some of these shows so I know what I'm doing when. I will be posting shows under a new section of my webpage ( http://daniduckart.weebly.com/) in the next coupe of days. I just got accepted for Christmas in Cloverdale December 6&7th!

My Etsy Shop!

I guess it's a bit silly that I had one post about my Etsy shop and not any links anywhere else on my blog in case someone is interested! I've just fixed that problem. I still have problems with accepting forms of payment other than Paypal, but hopefully I can get those fixed this week. Here are some of my items below. Just click to view them in shop! Prices start at $2.50.

King Midas Part 3

My computer is up and running again so hopefully things will go back to normal. It's so weird typing the word "normal" because my life always feels anything but normal. In any case I will redouble my efforts to keep doing review posts and other posts like this. This week's Part 3 is short, but I hope you will still enjoy it!

Stop, if you haven't read part one you can read it here: King Midas - Part 1

King Midas - Part 3

Inside the castle Eric explained the situation. “There was chaos after you left. The beds that we put in the city square were taken apart by the villagers and turned them into coins. Others chipped away the gold from the houses you decorated. Now everyone is the city is rich.”

“Well that's wonderful! I've always wanted my kingdom to flourish.”

“Not exactly my Lord. Since everyone in the city is rich, no one in the city is rich. Prices are going out of control. A few eggs cost more than a year's salary for most. People are beginning to panic. I'm not sure how long before they revolt!”

The king wiped his brow and threw his gloves on the ground. “I left you in charge, you were supposed to make sure situations like this didn't happen while I was gone!”

“Well I...”

“Whose stupid idea was it to put the gold beds in the centre of the city?” King Midas threw his hands up in the air.

Eric whispered, “It was your stupid idea, my Lord.”

“What was that?”

Eric spoke louder. “It was your stupid idea, my Lord.”

“My stupid idea? My stupid idea?”

“You told me to 'Give them to the orphans, set them in the city square, melt them down and give them to the poor.' That's exactly what I did.”

“You Fool!” King Midas Pushed Eric and began to yell. “I didn't mean to literally take the beds to the city centre! Why would you think that I would actually want you to do that? You need to learn to think for yourself. I can't believe I left you in charge.” King Midas paused to catch his breath. “Well, have you nothing to say for yourself?”

Eric did in fact have nothing to say for himself. The King looked towards Eric and he was, in fact, nothing more than a golden statue lying on the floor. Feeling quite embarrassed and remorseful Midas quickly slipped on his gloves.

“Reginald, Reginald get in here!”

Reginald slipped quietly into the room. “There has been an accident and Eric is now quite unable to do his tasks. Congratulations, you have been promoted. Please see to it that Eric's family gets reasonably compensated and that his life is honoured and...” Midas moved his hand in circles. “All the other things we do for those who have passed.”

“Yes, Your Majesty. What shall I do with the body.”

“Don't leave it in the city centre whatever you do!”

Reginald frowned. “My Lord?”

“Just do something sensible, and don't let any greedy citizens turn him into currency.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

What's Up Wednesday! Mobile Edition

Sunday wasn't as great as planned. It really didn't start out great in any case. Coffee was spilled on my computer at Midnight and it made the res of the day less special. It also makes it really difficult for me to post reviews and whatnot, so I'm putting off doing anything too extensive on my blog.

I enjoyed my illustrators meeting. It was a lot of fun and had a brief walk around Word Vancouver and bought some comics.

Late last night I got my Etsy Shop up and running: http://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/DaniDuckArt
I have my Colouring Book "The Pattern Pals" up on there along with my Mini Coloring Books and some original drawings. There are some kinks in this shop (like I can only take Paypal at this point), but I'm hoping that will be fixed by the end of the week.

Bah to Computer problems.

Etsy at Last!

I've not had the best of weeks. My computer went down due to a small shot of coffee (honestly, he's a lightweight when it comes to his brown drinks) and I don't know if it will make it through the week. I've had to use the library's computer to get anything done and that's only 90 minutes a day with no chance for parole (or more time). So my computer time is limited to this and my iPhone. Because of this my reviews will be suspended until I have regular access to a proper keyboard.

On top of that my son has been very sick. It hasn't stopped me from doing too much in art but I haven't been leaving the house  because of this. He is quite sweet when he's got a cold. He gives me lots of hugs and with every one he wipes snot on my shoulder! He's also been screaming at me to write his ABCs for him... he's a bit of a slave driver.

So there's those things and the fact that I totally got my Etsy shop up and running last night!
You can visit it here:
I have both my coloring books up for sale here
as well as some original sketches from the
making of "The Pattern Pals" If you don't buy
anything it's okay, but please stop in so I feel
good about the page views. Favoriting my
shop is good too and if you are able, please
share the link! I spent about 5-6 hours getting
this shop set up and most of that was on my
iPhone so please support my shop by at least
viewing it's contents. I will try to add new things
daily. Hopefully I'll have my computer in order
by the end of the week and it will be business
as usual on my blog.
