Interview with Jennifer Cole Judd

I have the absolutely wonderful Jennifer Cole Judd on my blog today. Jennifer is the only writer I know that was born on Halloween. She says she isn't a witch, but I know she has hidden magical powers. Maybe that's why she has such a great sense of humor? I'd have to see her on her birthday to know for sure!

Jennifer Cole Judd is the author of two books. Her first is a anthology of poems she wrote with Laura Wynkoop and 14 other poets. You can get a copy of "An Eyeball In my Garden: And Other Spine Tingling Poems" here. You can also get it on Amazon or an independent bookstore (indie bookstores rock) found through Inde Bound.

Jennifer's new book, "Circus Train" will be available March 24! You can pre-order "Circus Train" on Amazon here. Before you click any of the links be sure to read the interview here. Don't click the here in the last sentence. Just scroll down to read the interview below. Repeatedly clicking the link above may cause Carpal Tunnel, boredom, restlessness or sleepiness. You should not click anything if you haven't spoken to your Doctor first.

Dani:  Why kid's books?

Jennifer: That's a great question. I think the short answer is, I'm a kid in an adult body! The longer answer is, I am a mom to five munchkins (some of them not so "munckin-y" anymore), I have always loved literature in general, poetry, and children's books, and there is something magical about the connection of art and written word that comes together in a picture book that fills me with wide-eyed wonder. I love kids' books (my nightstand is FULL of books right now, and most of them, picture books!).

Dani: How many clowns fit in a clown car?

Jennifer: Well, that depends on if it's a SMART car, or, in my case, a clown minivan. On average, you can probably get about 346.2 clowns in the average clown car. The other .8 rides on the roof.

Dani: Finish these thoughts:

1. My first story... Was about an alien named "Blip" who came to earth to get away from his boring life. HIs mom came looking for him, though, so the gig was up too soon for Blip to really have a good time on this planet. I wrote it when I was in 2nd grade. I thought it was the best story ever, because my five-year-old little brother liked it. Still haven't published that one.

2. My favorite... I have so many favorites! Chocolate, Halloween, Cairn terriers, yoga, random dancing, I have SO many favorite children's books, I couldn't list them all, but my current new crushes are POEM-MOBILES--Crazy Car Poems by J. Patrick Lewis and Douglas Florian, and THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT by Drew Daywalt.

3. All I need... are front row seats to the circus (oh wait! I already have those here in my very own living room--my house is a three-ring circus!). Hmmm. Perhaps? A lion tamer. Tightrope walking lessons. A new clown wig.

Dani: What's special about your work?

Jennifer: That's a tough question. I tend to see the greatness in others' work, and fret and worry over my own a lot more, but I would say what is special about my work is a passion for lyrical language and poetry. My first publication, AN EYEBALL IN MY GARDEN, was an anthology of spooky poetry for middle graders that I co-edited with Laura Wynkoop, and included fourteen wonderful poets. I love poetry and rhyming stories, and hope to inspire a love of them in children. Writing in rhyme and writing poetry has compelled me to really brush up on rhythm and focus on finding a word that packs a punch, since rhyme and poetry gives you a bit more of a tighter structure and smaller space to get your ideas and images across. I love picture books and children's stories, but especially ones that are written in musical rhyme, and that's what I hope to deliver to my readers.

Dani: What is your ultimate goal in life?

Jennifer: My ultimate goal in life is to inspire kids (including my own five lovelies) to love writing, reading, and poetry, as well as to nurture their imaginations. And, in general, to do some good and spread some cheer in the world. And to ride a unicycle. Not necessarily in that order.
