What's Up Wednesday!

I feel like I'm sludging through these craft shows. Before I say more I will make a point of saying that the people I meet at these are great. I'm just having the worst luck ever selling anything. Last weekend I'm hoping it was slow because of the Grey Cup. I'm just hoping to make back my table at the next couple of events (which I haven't been doing. I really hope it's more my bad choice in shows than anything else. I think the next two shows will be better. One is a dreaded (but extremely busy) swap meet and one is a huge craft show. Both are at Cloverdale fairgrounds.

What I'm Reading
Blog posts!

What I'm Writing/Drawing

Still working on art cards. I didn't display them last time because I forgot to scan them first. Having a record of these is more important than making money!

I am also doing some larger stuffed Pattern Pals (which I may not sell online depending on shipping costs). I am also doing small (about 2.5" by 2.5") felt brooches/pins. These I may decide to sell online, but right now I'm focusing on selling them at my shows. I will post pictures for both later. If you are interested in either of these please let me know!

New Swap Meet this weekend:

November 30th
Cloverdale Kids Swap Meet6050 176 Street
Surrey, BC
9:00am - 12:30pm
If you have kids and live in the are you MUST go to this show! This is a great place to get kids clothing and toys for Christmas. I know that I'm going to *try* to do some shopping here. Not sure how much I'll actually get done, but I'm going to try. It will be rough being a vendor at the same time! I may try to get my husband to come with me so I can have a stand in for a bit!

My toddler who is learning so much right now!

What Else I've Been Up To

Baby Minding

David is sleeping a lot better now. He's still waking at night, but it's easier to get him to sleep. He's learning so much right now! Not even three and he can count to 17 most of the time. He knows all his letters large and small (but not necessarily in order). He also knows an assortment of shapes. He can do 48 piece puzzles all by himself (and larger with help). He's still having problems with colours, but he'll get there.

Gonna go watch Dr. Who now!

Kate Scott Writes

Sorry this is a late post tonight! Lots of things going on so it was hard to post earlier today. Today I'm doing a review of Kate Scott's blog. In Febuary of 2014 Kate Scott's YA novel Counting to D will be in bookstores. You can see her blog here: http://www.katescottwrites.com/

Both Kate Scott and myself participate in "What's Up Wednesday". Her posts are different from mine because they are more deeply personal. As a result of this her posts tend to be far more informative than mine, even when they are shorter. Because Kate's posts are so personal it makes me feel like I know her. I'm impressed in the way that her personality shines through in these posts.

I love, love, love Kate's weekly interview posts. Even more so I love the concept behind them. She believes that everyone, though they might seem ordinary, are wonderful. This is just fantastic. In her own words:

"I love to read, and write, because I love stories. Everyone has a story to tell. That's what makes this crazy world we live in so interesting. Every Monday, I interview a different person here and share their stories. At first glance, my guests may appear ordinary, but I promise they're not. They're people. And all people are fascinating. We all have a story to tell."

This is the one of the reasons I watch the TV show Dr. Who. Yes it's crazy science fiction, but in several episodes he says that "ordinary" people are the most fantastic people. Quote from the Doctor himself (he was speaking to a man, but he means the same about women as well):

"An ordinary man: that's the most important thing in creation. The whole world's different because he's alive!

It may seem like a silly comparison, but I think that someone can see the extraordinary in the ordinary is a person worth getting to know. I haven't read any of Kate's books (yet), but just based on this bit of knowledge alone I advise strongly to check out her new book.

Besides her wonderful view on people, Kate's interviews are great. She has a way of asking questions to get the most out of her interviews. She knows how to get the most out of each and every interview. I've seen many interviews that are stale, but every single one of her interviews shows the beauty in each person she interviews.

I think you are missing out if you don't check out Kate's blog. Her views alone on the world are a great reason to check this blog out.

Tara Lazar - Writing Books for Kids (While Raising Them) & PiBoIdMo

I think it's only fair since I reviewed Meg Miller's blog and ReviMo (which is coming up in January.) I should also do Tara Lazar's blog and PiBoIdMo as well! Unfortunately I'm doing this a bit late because the registration for PiBoIdMo is over this year, however you can still go to Tara's blog, take the challenge without the prizes and learn a lot from this event.

Before I start talking about PiBoIdMo I want to first tell you about Tara's blog when she's not talking Picture Book Idea Month. One thing I like about Tara's blog is the way she has of inspiring writers. Every writer gets to the point where they hit a wall. Tara's blog has lots of little cures for this. She tells her readers about the hurdles she has face (and is still facing) and what she did to accomplish her goals. Even if her advice doesn't help solve your problem, it still is nice to know you aren't alone in the Picture Book world.

Besides being inspiring Tara also has wonderful interviews (with more inspiring people!) The people that Tara interviews are great influential (or soon to be influential people in the picture book world. There are also lots of great contests to enter on Tara's blog. One could say that winning all these contest would make it so you never have to buy another book again, but honestly who are we kidding. This just saves us money so we can spend it on more books!

My favorite thing about Tara's blog is probably the concept behind it. Writing for Kids (While Raising Them). This is the boat that I'm in now. If you don't have kids I have to tell you that it's incredibly hard to create picture books when you have young ones of your own (especially as a stay at home parent). I love that Tara's blog is there proving that parents can create great picture books. Honestly, I think in some weird way not having time (or sanity) gives us parents a little more focus when we do make time to write.

Now more about PiBoIdMo or Picture Book Idea Month! This is a wonderful idea for me. Last year I joined the 12 x 12. I joined with the idea that I was going to submit a bunch of picture book manuscripts to agents so I got gold level membership which I do not regret. What I do regret is the fact that I stopped coming up with new stories to write. I have been so busy and my idea pool has run dry. I just couldn't think of any way to reasonably generate new ideas. I've still been incredibly busy but I've found the time to generate a lot of ideas for picture books.

Tara is a great supporter of her fellow picture book creators. Even long after PiBoIdMo Tara shares the success stories of all the people who succeed as a direct result of participating in PiBoIdMo! The big example of this is the fact that she works so hard on PiBoIdMo. What she does with this has inspired so many people to be successful and I hope that she continues PiBoIdMo for many years to come!

So busy this week. My son is still not sleeping well. The cold has settled in his chest so he's on different antibiotics now. Hopefully he'll feel better soon.

RJ Hamm's Art

Hi everyone! I'm sorry everyone. I haven't been able to keep up with my blog as I would like. I will post a "What's Up Wednesday" post tonight sometime. Yes it's a day late, but such is life.

A couple days ago in the mail I got a package. Inside was a picture by RJ Hamm. Now I wasn't shocked that I received this picture in the mail. In fact I had won it in a contest! Robert asked in the forums what he had in his breast pocket. There were all kinds of answers from lint to pens and I believe even an egg. I said the only logical thing that came to mind, "Nothing, you have nothing in your pocket." I believed it too. I don't know if it was my belief or the actual fact that there was nothing in his pocket that won me the print, but I won!

RJ Hamm sells photo prints on his Etsy shop. Below is the lovely print that I received from the contest. I just need to get it framed now! I'm so excited. You can see more of RJ Hamm's work or order prints at his Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/RJsnapshot

Meg Miller's Painting of Me!

Meg Miller ran a contest a little while ago to advertise ReviMo or Revise More Picture Books Week!  http://megmillerwrites.blogspot.ca/p/revimo_16.html Well I was one of the winners of this contest. I could have won a Starbucks card or have myself cartooned by the talented Meg Miller. Guess which one I chose? Here is the wonderful painting she did of me! She did a wonderful job. Thank you so much again, Meg!

Some New Work

I've been working on a lot of things lately, and I haven't had time to show it all. This first bunch are just things that I've put up in my shop lately, but they are fun so I'll share them with me. I'm planing on doing a bunch of arceos (2.5x3.5 artwork) so I'll be posting them here in the between times as I get them done. I have about 7 inked and ready for colours already. Look for those in the near future!

I'm showing you two of the duck cards because both of these have sold! I did the best to show these cards, but most of these are metallic so I don't think it's possible to show them in all their shiny glory. Maybe if I did .gifs you could see them better?

All of these are in my Etsy shop, so click on the link to the right if you want to see more!

What's Up Wednesday!

I didn't get a chance to do a Blog Review yesterday. Had some family issues recently that made it extremely difficult. The big thing was Peter's (my husband) Grandmother was in the hospital. It was thought that she might pass Monday. It seems as though she's mostly out of the woods now, but there are things that are wrong with her that can't be repaired. She may not be with us much longer, but I do hope she can spend Christmas with us this year.

Though it is a lesser problem... or at least a non-life threatening problem: My son has been insane for about 2-2.5 weeks now. He's not been sleeping or eating well. He's been irritable and irrational. I assure you that most of this is quite normal for him. The big difference is that he's been screaming bloody murder about well bloody everything. He doesn't just want some candy - He screams, "I NEED CHOCOLATE CANDY!" Actually when he needs anything he screams. He also threw short screaming fit when I politely told him "No, that's not our Skytrain stop". Long story short we went to the Dr. today and he's got an ear infection (after which he informs me that his ears hurt.. ya could have told me before kid!). He's on antibiotics for the next little while. He's had this before several times & will feel better in a few days.

What I'm Reading

The back of my eyelids. Good stories there.

What I'm Writing/Drawing

I'm going to do my first Craft Show this weekend! Here's the info if you are in the area:

Elim Village 5th Annual Christmas Craft Fair & Market
Free admission.
9008 158th Street

Surrey
Free Admission
Fri. Nov. 8: 6:00-9:00pm

Sat Nov 9: 10:00am-3:00pm

Peter's dad (Minuteman Press North Vancouver) printed out a bunch of black and white posters for me on card stock. While I will have my coloring books and my free coloring pages, these are big posters (12.5"x18") than can be colored and put up on the wall! I've also added some sparkling Christmas cards to my Greeting Card selection. You can see a sample here. These are slightly more expensive than the other cards because of the costs of the materials.

I bought a couple things for my table recently so I can have a nicer, more organized display. I also found another table easel for displays. It will be a bit of a hodge podge of display items, but it will keep me a little more organized!

Titles and Titles

So this past week on the first day of PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month) Tammi Sauer suggested that we start with the title of our picture books to get ideas. You can see the article here: http://taralazar.com/2013/11/01/piboidmo-day-1-tammi-sauer/

That's a great idea! Well the problem is that my mind starts in the worst possible places for this. As such I have composed a list of picture book titles that probably shouldn't be used by anyone ever (Now I'm thinking, "Challenge Accepted"). Many of these come from stuff my kid says or does. If you don't know why these books shouldn't be picture books then you're probably my kind of person! So here it is, coil in horror and hide your children.

Picture Book Titles That Probably Shouldn't Be Made Into Picture Books:

1. Big Baldy Balls or Big Bally Balls - Yes, my son says this quite often.

2. The Growth in the Fridge - The pictures for this would be too graphic for a Picture Book.

3. Look What I Found in the Loo - This book might be more popular in Europe.

4. Batman Made Me Fall Down - Obvious copyright issues.

5. Let's Scream and Chase the Cat - Animal cruelty issues.

6. Daddy's Sleeping: Time to Hop on Pop - Parent cruelty and possible copyright issues.

7. Up, Down, Pot-ty-ty - Dangerous at any age.

8. Sleep is for the Weak - A parent's worst nightmare.

9. A Fly Hurts - This title makes no sense. Like I said a hundred times: the fly isn't going to hurt you.

10. Mommy, Mommy, Mommy... Too true and annoying.

Interview With Anna Staniszewski

Okay everyone, I'm going to try something a little different today. It's an interview with Author Anna Staniszewski!

I met Anna on the blue boards. She is a fantastic writer! Her blog www.annastan.com is intelligent as it is informative. No, I don't know why I haven't reviewed her blog here yet. I guarantee I will correct this in the future. I found out that her new book is coming out November 5, 2013 (that's just a couple days from now!) and asked her to be interviewed on my blog. Something I haven't done before! You can see the book trailer here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzSjSjMZaJc&feature=youtu.be I hope you all enjoy my first interview!

About Anna:

Born in Poland and raised in the United States, Anna Staniszewski grew up loving stories in both Polish and English. She was named the 2006-2007 Writer-in-Residence at the Boston Public Library and a winner of the 2009 PEN New England Susan P. Bloom Discovery Award. Currently, Anna lives outside of Boston with her husband and their black Labrador, Emma.

When she’s not writing, Anna spends her time teaching, reading, and challenging unicorns to games of hopscotch. She is the author of My Very UnFairy Tale Life and its sequels, My Epic Fairy Tale Fail and My Sort of Fairy Tale Ending, all published by Sourcebooks Jabberwocky. Look for the first book in Anna’s next tween series, The Dirt Diary, in January 2014, and visit her at www.annastan.com.

What's one thing that people might not know about you?

I have far too high of a tolerance for sugar. My husband and I went to a chocolate buffet a few years ago; he was shaking by the end and I was perfectly fine and pretty much in heaven. :-)

Who or what inspired you to write the My Very Unfairy Tale Life Series?

The series started with a very short scene about a girl who finds a talking frog in her bedroom. The girl was so annoyed at the sight of the frog--she even threw him out the window!--that I knew I had to find out more about her. Three books later and I'm still never sure what Jenny will do!

Were there any major hiccups writing the series or the book "My Sort of Fairy Tale Ending"?

The big hiccups really came in the first book. It started as a project I was writing for fun, which meant that I would write a chapter, put it away, write another chapter, etc. When the project was finished, it was a huge mess. It took many revisions (and a lot of cutting and tightening) to get it to work. I had a much clearer plan going into the follow-up books which helped keep me on track.

How is "My Very Unfairy Tale Life" series different than other Fairy Tale books out there?

When I started working on the project, I wanted to tell a funny story about a disgruntled magical adventurer, and ultimately, I think that's what the books are. They're mostly about Jenny's wacky misadventures, with some fairy tale twists along the way.

How do you feel that the series is coming to a "sort of" close?

The UnFairy Tale series is full of fairy tales that don't work out the way you think they're supposed to, so I knew that Jenny would never have a perfect fairy tale ending--at least not the Disney kind--but that she'd find her own brand of happily ever after.

Do you have anything else you are working on right now?

I do! The first book in my next series, The Dirt Diary, is coming out in January, and I'm currently working on the sequel, The Prank List, which will be out in July.

What's Up.... Today

I'll bet if you are one of the people who entered my contest you are wondering who the winner is to each of my giveaways. Me too... sorry something is up with Rafflecopter and I'm unable to pick a winner right this minute. I'll try again tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to figure it out. If not, I'll just use the numbers that Rafflecopter gave me and pick a winner that way. You'll still get the same number of entries as you have and the same number on your entries according to how Rafflecopter recorded everything.

What I'm Reading

The new SCBWI bulletin ASAP!

What I'm Writing/Drawing

I came up with some new greeting cards and put them up on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/DaniDuckArt Unfortunately I'll never be able to post everything here, because many of the cards I wont be able to make multiples of simply because some of the ribbon I bought was on closeout. Bad planning on my part.

Thinking about adding coloring posters to my craft fairs and possibly Etsy. Also maybe gift tags. I'd like to do more illustrations as well but I want to focus on smaller items for my shop right now. I haven't given up on my illustration goals though!

I think I'm giving up Swap Meets for good as far as selling my art. I made exactly $0 at any Swap Meet I've been to with my art. I may sell used clothing at these, but artwork? nope. I think my prices just might be too far above what people want to spend at a Swap Meet. I hope that future shows are better.

What Inspires Me Right Now

Feed My Reads. That's right, two weeks in a row! I even did a blog post about this: http://daniduckart.blogspot.ca/2013/10/feed-my-reads.html Check it out and tell me what you think!

What Else I've Been Up To

Baby Minding
He was the cutest little thing going Trick or Treating this Halloween. Decked out in his Superman outfit he ran from door to door screaming "Sebby" (his friends name). He said, "trick or treat" and "thank you" a lot this year. He also screamed bloody murder when I had to take some of his "chocolate candy" and put it in my pockets so he had enough room in his bucket for more candy. I didn't eat most of his candy. ^_^ here he is in his cape. I have one of him in the full outfit but it's not on my computer yet.

Working Out/Being Healthy
Still sick!
